This is a Burda dress pattern which I altered a bit- the darts are not as indicated in the pattern but

simplified. It`s a really versatile dress, made here more as a spring or winter dress because of the wool and silk fabric…

When thinking about what to sew I always find myself wandering towards the 50s fashion. Sure, it`s a thing… and very trendy at the moment (it`s been for a couple of years). But it`s not what I was aiming for. When I think of something I would like to sew for myself I am thinking of the ideal me. The ideal me walks around sleek, almost floating through boulevards (imagine Paris) with a hat and gloves all sophisticated.

And the funny thing is that the fashion that this ideal me is wearing is always reminiscent of 50s fashion- a pencil skirt or a very very full skirt. This ideal me is more of an image of me in the most sophisticated outfits, not ideal in terms of looks and what I would or wouldn`t change on me physically (no, no physical imperfections is something that I am tired of. Skinny, fat, thin lips, full lips…who cares). Me in real life doesn`t have time to wear that. I work at home so none of that getting ready for work stuff (sadly) or I`m driving my kid around… For instance, the dress on the photo (Burda pattern by the way) I wore to the photoshoot and after that.. well never… (But I do like to look at it in my closet!!!! 🙂 )

The only time I have an opportunity to get dressed as in my fashion fantasy is when we go to walk and sit to drink coffee in Sunday or Saturday morning. I don`t know if many countries have this custom as we in the Balkans have- sitting in a café and drinking coffee all day long. I don`t know, it`s like Siesta but it`s not after meal or something and you`re not sleeping but you`re are taking a break. It`s just about chilling and talking to friends. On a job or not you will always find that everybody is sitting in cafes.  Especially on a Saturday morning. That`s the best time to do your grocery shopping catch up with friends and of course show off your latest clothes. I feel silly explaining this if someone from the Balkans is reading this, but I think that anyone from western Europe, America or I don`t know Japan will maybe find this custom unfamiliar. It`s not the greatest thing that describes our nation, but here it`s almost unavoidable. You can be at work but you will still be able to sneak out to have your coffee break. Horrible I know, that`s why our economy is as it is…

Ok to get back to my point, so I`m walking on my Saturday coffee appointment and even then well carrying a small child is not very heel friendly or wearing silk skirts… And that nice clutch that can`t hold a pack of wet tissues to wipe my child all over when he decides to spill his drink…

Ah, when you think of it what`s the point of getting all dressed anyways…? Of course there`s a point to that! It`s not just shallow talk… Ok I work out, I try to recycle, I adopted a dog from the shelter (who by the way is so grateful for that that is running away all the time- irrelevant but annoying)… But at the end of a day I want to feel special, beautiful… I want my Saturday walk with me all dressed up and feeling fantastic. Even if at the end of that walk my kid will be screaming, I will be trying to find a parking spot for an hour (it`s tourist season here so it gets a bit frenzy) and the coffee will taste like s*.

But when I look around, well don`t get me wrong… But… Well most people I see aren`t really paying to much attention to their looks. I mean they are, but they`re all in comfy sports I don’t care look (like me on a “ordinary ” day I suppose). And this is what I came to think about- where did all that 50s glamour disappear? Ok it`s great we can have comfortable clothes, and wear what ever we like. Because let`s get real women back in 50`s were almost forced to wear girdles and corsets, and all kinds of gloves in all kinds of events. I mean, huh, let`s be realistic that`s very tiresome and straining. (I wouldn`t last a day in that clothes probably 😉 ). But come on, I still want my 30 minutes of walking around feeling all glamorous and beautiful. For just this 30 minutes…
The rest of the week, well we will just put on the first clean t shirt or a sweater which can pass as work appropriate and go on with our lives…
